Toni and I haven’t really talked much this past week but I didn’t mind because I knew I would be seeing her often now that school had started.

I would definitely see her every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and I knew where her office was. All I needed now was her schedule to know when I could meet up with her and she promised to give it to me today (Wednesday) when I saw her for our first class.

As we sat in the computer lab listening to Toni explain what this course would be about and all that exciting stuff, I took that time to study her. Something was definitely wrong. There was something, subtle as it may have been, different about her.

Peyton said she did not see what I was talking about. She thought that Toni seemed the same to her but I knew there was something there. There was something she was holding back—more than usual—something was hurting her to her soul.

At the end of class, I told Peyton to go on without me. I had to at least try to get Toni to talk to me.

When she saw me approaching her I was positive that she cringed. I brushed it off though. “Hi, miss, could you spare a moment of your time?”

I was pleased to see her chuckle. “How long is a moment?”

“As long as it takes to get you to talk to me.”

Her eyes fell at my words and she sighed. “Let’s go to my office…”

When we got to her office fond memories of last semester danced through my mind and I knew she had them too—her body told me.

She gave me her schedule and proceeded to look at me from across her desk.

“What is going on with you, Toni?”

“What do you mean?”

“You know what I mean.”

She sighed. “I guess that whole robbery thing really shook me up.”

I wanted to believe her but I didn’t. I could tell she was lying. “You’re lying, Toni.”

She looked me square in the eye before leaning back into her chair. “Casey, let’s not do this. Please. The last thing I need right now is you breathing down my neck.”

“So you are lying?”

“Casey…”

“Answer me one thing and then I’ll stop.”

“What?”

“If the reason you didn’t talk to me for almost a week is that you got robbed and lost your phone. Fine. I’m willing to believe that.”

“I thought you had a question?”

“I do.” She looked at me impatiently and I continued, “What was your reason for ignoring me last year then? You never did give me a reason.”

“Casey…I had a lot on my plate then. Work for school, work for my clients.”

“Lies, Toni! I have seen you manage a crapton of work and still find time to screw me. Tell me the truth!”

“Look, I answered your question. Now, do as you promised and stop.”

I was infuriated. What the hell was happening?

“Do I bore you? Are you tired of me? Is that it?” I was trying to hold back my tears but I obviously did not try hard enough.
